31ST BATCH OF TIBETAN LANGUAGE COURSE

Introduction

Step forward to experience this historic language, which originated in the 7th century (c. 618–650 CE) during the reign of the 33rd King of Tibet,Songtsen Gampo. The Tibetan script was developed and formally introduced in Tibet by his minister, Thonmi Sambhota, who was sent to India by King Songtsen Gampo in the mid-7th century to study writing systems. Thonmi Sambhota created the script based on Indian Gupta characters to allow the translation of Buddhist scriptures into Tibetan.

Thonmi Sambhota is often considered an emanation of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of wisdom, and was highly regarded for creating the foundation for Tibetan literature and culture.
Key details about Thonmi Sambhota include:

  • Mission: He was sent to India to study Sanskrit and Buddhist texts, where he was recognized for his brilliance.
  • Creation: He developed the 30-consonant, 4-vowel Tibetan alphabet, largely modeled on Indian Brahmic scripts, along with early grammar texts.
  • Purpose: The primary goal was to bring Buddhism to Tibet by translating scriptures (Sutras/Tantras), which previously were only transmitted orally.
  • Role: He was recognized as one of the “seven wise ministers” of King Songtsen Gampo.

Thonmi Sambhota is often considered an emanation of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of wisdom, and was highly regarded for creating the foundation for Tibetan literature and culture.
After successfully completing the 30th batch of TLC, Tibet House, New Delhi is delighted to offer you the opportunity to enroll in the 31st batch of the Tibetan Language Course (TLC).
